IThe gastronomy of Egypt

The gastronomy of Egypt is very varied due to its geographical position that acts as a bridge between African and Mediterranean cuisine.

Typical dishes to eat in Egypt:

1. Ful Medames

It is probably the national dish, an energy shot that you have to try at least once (you usually eat breakfast here). Broad beans (ful) are the main protagonists of the dish. They are cooked with a garlic sauce, after being crushed a little, in a copper saucepan and served accompanied by a good splash of olive oil, parsley, onions and lemon. It is not uncommon that to eat them they also serve you pita bread.

2. Koshari

Another vegetarian dish that is prepared with the most varied ingredients: pasta, tomato sauce, rice, caramelized onion, garlic, lentils, chickpeas ... Come on, a somewhat curious and very rich mixture that you will definitely have to try on your trip to Egypt.

3. Baba Ganoush

Although many think that it was invented in Lebanon, baba ganoush is a dish that you will soon find on the menus of Egyptian restaurants. It is a cream of roasted aubergine, olive oil, garlic, sesame paste (tahina) and lemon, very similar in texture to hummus, which like this is eaten with pita bread.

4. Fatteh

It is a plate of meat (beef or chicken), rice, garlic, and layers of dry bread dipped in broth. It is usually cooked in the oven and served with yogurt and nuts.

5. Mulukhiyah (also called Mulujíe)

It is a soup that is prepared with jute leaves, a plant characterized by a bitter taste that softens once cooked. Garlic, broth and sometimes coriander are added to jute.

6. Falafel and Shawarma

As in all countries in the Middle East, you will soon find restaurants specialized in falafel, some chickpea croquettes, spices and suuuuper rich aromatic herbs. Surely you already tried it in your city but believe us: nothing to do with those here. It is, without a doubt, one of the cheapest and most famous street food in Egypt and in the world.

7. Mahshi

Another great dish for vegetarian travelers. It basically consists of baked vegetables, usually peppers, zucchini or eggplant, stuffed with rice mixed with aromatic herbs (parsley, coriander ...). It is accompanied with tomato sauce.
