ICuriosity about Egypt
As much as it is
studied and as much as we think we know about Ancient Egypt, there are still
many things that perhaps you did not know about this culture that influenced
history so much.
There are still many
puzzles to be discovered around Ancient Egypt, one of the oldest and most
studied civilizations.
1- Although she was
born in Alexandria, Cleopatra was not Egyptian. He descended from a long line
of Macedonians, successors to Ptolemy I. The Ptolemaic dynasty ruled almost 3
centuries in Egypt but still maintained their Greek culture. When Cleopatra
rose to power, she had to learn Egyptian.
2- The Egyptians were
great animal lovers, so much so that it was one of the first cultures to have
pets. Cats, dogs and monkeys were her favorite pets, being part of the family
and organizing a real duel when they passed away. (link article pets).
3- The use of
prostheses was already used by the Egyptians in the XV century B.C. Various
prostheses such as wooden fingers or arms have been discovered in excavations.
4- In many standing
statues of pharaohs, a tube is seen in their hands. Much has been speculated
about this element thinking that it could be a papyrus or the neck of a
scepter. The most proven theory is that it is an architectural element since
leaving a hole in the hand would make the sculpture more fragile and weak over
time.
5- Egyptian women
enjoyed almost the same rights as men. They had the right to divorce and the
right to work. Those women who worked outside the home received the same salary
as men.
6- The pyramids were
not built by slaves but by free men who received a salary. The slaves that
existed at that time were used as domestic service.
7- Most of the country
is in Africa, but the Sinai Peninsula is considered Asia
8- More than 95% of
the country's extension is arid desert, so 90% of the population is
concentrated in 3% of the territory
9- The oldest known
writing system was born in Egypt, the hieroglyph. It means sacred stone writing
and dates from 3,200 B.C.
10- The ancient
Egyptians thought that the heart was the center of wisdom of man and not the
brain
11- The Great
Pyramid of Giza is one of the 7 wonders of the ancient world. The only one that
has survived to this day.
12- Did you know that
many of the household utensils that we use were invented or used by the ancient
Egyptians? These include the key and lock, combs, scissors, wigs, makeup,
deodorants, toothbrushes, and even toothpaste. Curious, right?
13- The Great Pyramid
of Giza, the only one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, which has
survived to this day, is made up of 2,300,000 individual stone blocks, each
weighing around 2.5 tons.
14- The Book of the
Dead was a fundamental work of the culture of ancient Egypt. It was a very long
text: some specimens preserved in papyrus rolls reach forty meters. It was also
an expensive product, for which you could pay a silver debit, half of a
farmer's annual pay. But, for the Egyptians, the value of this text was
incalculable, since its formulas allowed the deceased to reach the Hereafter.
15- Finally, to the
ancient Egyptians we owe the preparation of a 365-day calendar that has
survived until now, only modified twice; in the 1st century B.C. when the
Julian Calendar was developed and in 1582 when the Gregorian Calendar (Gregory
XIII) was established.
